Young unemployed people in West Lothian given helping hand back to work with Stoddart's
6th of September 2012
On the 20th of this month young unemployed people from in and around West Lothian will have the opportunity to gain the skills they need to get back into work when they visit Stoddart’s as part of Feeding Britain’s Future – Skills for Work Week.
Youngsters from the local area will be given a tour of Stoddart’s state of the art production facility at Broxburn by members of management, and have the chance to talk to current employees to find out what working in the food and grocery industry is really like. Participants will also attend workshops with Human Resources to help them develop their employability skills and improve their chances of getting a job.
Working in partnership with Jobcentre Plus in Broxburn, Stoddart’s is taking part in the national Feeding Britain’s Future campaign, which has united the entire food and grocery industry in an effort to tackle youth unemployment. This week businesses across the industry’s supply chain will open their doors to provide free skills training for thousands of young unemployed people in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Feeding Britain’s Future, driven by industry think-tank IGD, is the first initiative of its kind, giving young people access to farms, factories and stores, and firsthand knowledge of the skills needed for a career in the food industry or elsewhere. The food and grocery industry is the UK’s biggest employer providing 3.6m - or one in seven – jobs and there are a huge range of careers on offer.
“At Stoddart’s we work continuously to promote youth employment, both on a local and national level, as it is something which we are extremely passionate about. As an industry we are experiencing a number of skills shortages, and the young people of today are of crucial importance to the continued success of our businesses. We are looking forward to welcoming the young people onto our premises on Thursday 20th September 2012 and showing them around, so that they can see for themselves the variety of employment opportunities that exist within the food and grocery industry, in particular here at Stoddart’s.” - Katie Heslop. Human Resources Manager
